Rwandan Civil War
In October 1990, Rwigyema led a force of over 4,000 rebels from Uganda, advancing 37 miles into Rwandan. Rwigyema was killed on the third day of the attack, meanwhile France and Zaire deployed forces in support of the Rwandan army. This allowed them to repel the invasion.
The war restarted in January 1991, with a surprise attack on the Northern town of Ruhengeri. In June 1992, the RPF(Rwandan Patriotic Front) announced a ceasefire and began negotiations with the Rwandan government in Arusha, Tanzania.In early 1993, several extremist groups formed a began campaings of violence against the Tutsi.
The RPF responded by suspending peace talks and launching a major attack, gaining a large area of land across the north of the country. Peace negotiations eventually resumed.The resulting set of agreements, were signed in August 1993 and gave the RPF positions in a Broad-Based Transitional Government (BBTG) and in the national army.
